Outreach Activities
i National
• Non-formal Courses and Resources (NFCAR)
o Customised programmes for target groups including IFS probationers, IAF officers, Officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat
o Regular programmes for general members of the public.
• Teacher education extension services
o sponsored by state/national governments and private sectors – participants come from KendriyaVidyalaya, FLAIR, Government of Kerala, ELTI, etc.
• Teacher education projects
o District Centre Scheme (DCS):saturation level training provided to teachers through 33 District Centres for English across the country.
o English Language Teaching Institutes Support Scheme (ELTISS): in-service training programmes to teachers of English at the secondary and higher secondary level in India through its 15 State Institutes of English and 2 Regional Institutes of English.
ii International: on-campus• International Training Programme (ITP) for developing language skills of foreign nationals: professionals including ministers, members of parliament, diplomats, doctors, pilots, lawyers, auditors, journalists and government officials from over 100 countries
• Teacher education programmes for groups of English teachers from other countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, etc.
International: off shore• With the support of MEA, GOI, EFL University has set up Centres for English Language Training (CELTs) abroad to develop communication skills of peoples in the ASEAN countries Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Soon to start in African countriesSudan, Djibouti, Central African Republic, Togo and Mauritania.
iii. GoI projects• National Literacy Mission Authority, MHRD, GOI: produced six levels of English proficiency descriptors, curriculum for these descriptors and testing guidelines.
• National University Students Skills Development Programme, Ministry of Youth Affairs, GOI: Project from the Office of the Advisor to the Prime Minister on Skill Development to design the English communication skills component of a vocational training programme intended to improve employability skills of Degree level students in Indian universities.
Student Achievements
Various Fulbright scholarships, Erasmus Mundus, Cambridge-Gates, Assistanat. Successful applicants to programmes in Cambridge, MIT, Kent, and Cornell.
Faculty Projects
• Forensic linguistics: voice identification, forensic phonetics, native language analysis, speech veracity analysis, etc.
• Digital humanities: developing innovative digital databases of cultural memories and cultural creations of the least represented and fast receding oral, narrative and visual-performativemnemocultures of the marginalized communities.
• Cognitive Science Research: to facilitate a better understanding of Indian languages and help explore solutions for cognitive disorders by identifying/ formulating better intervention technologies and rehabilitation programmes.
• BRICS Project:Concerned with comparing media systems and journalism doctrines in the new coalition in global politics known as “BRICS” – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This provides a challenge to conventional ways of approaching media systems and the role of journalism in society.
